FIFA killjoys force Mexican team to return World Cup Rolex gifts
The Mexican soccer team has been ordered to return expensive Rolex watches that were gifted by an American YouTube influencer.
‘Stevewilldoit’ — real name Stephen Deleonardis — claims to have spent $1 million on the timepieces for all the players, as well as the coaching staff.
But now the sport’s governing body FIFA has insisted that the watches be returned, as in their rules it states that any gifts must “have symbolic or trivial value.” Rolexes from Stevewilldoit don’t tick either box.
The irony of FIFA clamping down on gifts like this is not lost on soccer fans, given the government body’s track record of corruption and bribery.
Mexico ended up losing to England 2-3 in Mexico City, meaning that they miss out on a quarter final spot.
