Jacob & Co. sets diamonds into flying tourbillon balance wheel
Jacob & Co. has introduced the Brilliant Flying Tourbillon Baguette Pastel Arlequino, featuring what it describes as the first diamond-set balance wheel in modern watchmaking.
The result of the work sees the balance wheel set with 54 brilliant-cut white diamonds, oscillating at 3 Hz inside a flying tourbillon that completes one rotation every 60 seconds.
Adding stones to the balance wheel presents a technical challenge because changes in mass and weight distribution can affect timekeeping. Jacob & Co. says the component was therefore engineered to accommodate the diamonds without compromising chronometric performance.
Powered by the new self-winding JCFA02 calibre, the movement combines the flying tourbillon with a micro-rotor and offers a 72-hour power reserve.
Keeping with the implementation of diamonds theme, a further 234 brilliant-cut white diamonds are set into the movement’s bridges.
42 mm in diameter, the 11.61 mm-thick case is made from 18K white gold and set with 194 baguette-cut sapphires and 32 baguette-cut white diamonds.
