Rare Paul Newman Daytona to take centre stage at Fellows sale

Independent auction house Fellows will be showcasing a ‘Paul Newman’ Rolex Daytona at its forthcoming watches sale on 26 February.

Actor Paul Newman has become forever associated with the Rolex Daytona, after sporting the one that he received as a gift from his wife throughout the 1970s.

He wore one of the ‘exotic’ Daytonas, which had been made in response to initially underwhelming sales of the model. Its oversized sub-dial markers and distinctive red outer minute track are what distinguished the dials on these watches, and gave them their ‘exotic’ label.

So sought after are the original examples of these Daytonas, that Paul Newman’s own one went for $17.8 million at auction just nine years ago.

The watch up for grabs at Fellows’ 26 February auction is estimated to sell for £80,000–120,000.

Also at the upcoming Fellows sale will be a Rolex ‘Pepsi’ GMT-Master with a pumpkin-lumed dial and hands (estimate of £8,000–12,000), as well as a rare, art deco-styled Rolex Prince from 1929, featuring a striped white and yellow gold case (estimate of £2,500–3,500).

Another highlight to look out for is a Heuer Monaco, which comes with original guarantee papers from 1972, and service papers from 1984 and 2011 (estimate of £8,000–12,000).
