Trump teases tariff rebate

President Trump has teased the idea of giving money directly to U.S. citizens from the money raised by his administration’s controversial tariffs.

Describing the idea as ‘almost like a dividend to the American people,’ Trump told OANN that he also wanted to use the hundreds of billions of dollars that the tariffs will raise to pay off some of the $38trillion national debt.

‘We’re thinking maybe $1,000 to $2,000 – it would be great,’ he added during the interview.

Strategically, some will question the logic of such a move. Price rises, which these rebates would help fuel, are not a good thing for customers, not least because luxury brands will not reverse a price rise, even if the tariff war ends.
