Turnover and operating profit up at Robert Gatward Jewellers
Robert Gatward Jewellers has published its financial results for the year ending 30 September 2025, with both turnover and profit up, year-on-year.
Its sales rose 19% to £18,845,107, up from £15,845,356; while operating profit increased 7% from £2,551,337 to £2,732,380.
The company said that a key part of the impressive results is the fact that its Thame store — which it shuttered in late 2024 — generated higher than normal sales during its closing down sale, albeit at a lower margin.
Its acquisition of TL Jewellers in March 2025 — which the company chose to close too — also generated higher sales at lower margin, playing a part in gross profit margin reducing from 35.48% to 33.80%.
“Although a write down of the value of the investment in TL Jewellers Ltd resulted from the closing down sale and the decision to cease trading this business, this was more than offset by the final trading figures and the net profit achieved in the period from the business,” the company reflected. “Although the decision to acquire the business did not play out as hoped, the business was all but wound up and assets disposed of in the year with no loss to the business overall.
“Whilst the Directors are never happy with store closures, it facilitated further disposals of old stock across the group, giving a one off boost to current year profits and cash flow and will have no significant detrimental impact on ongoing profitability,” the company said.
As with most businesses, Robert Gatward has also seen the cost of employment rise, following Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ decision to increase national insurance contributions for employers.”Employment costs continue to be an area of significant pressure with both cost-of-living impact and tax changes pushing up this area of costs,” it said.
The retailer now has three stores: one in Ipswich, one in Abingdon, and its flagship store in Windsor, where it is a Rolex authorised dealer and recently part of the Rolex Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) programme.
It’s at this Windsor store that a major refurbishment is currently underway, with a re-opening date of 1 August pencilled in.
