Valuers’ Conference sees 20% uplift in attendance
The National Association of Jewellers (NAJ) is reflecting on a successful Valuers’ Conference, which took place in Birmingham at the weekend.
The conference, which was hosted by the Institute of Registered Valuers (IRV), brought together jewellery valuers, students, international guests, and wider trade professionals for two days at the Edgbaston Park Hotel. Organisers say that there was a 20% increase in attendance year-on-year.
The 2026 event was again sponsored by Bonhams, whose global head of watches, Jonathan Darracott, also spoke during the Saturday line-up of expert talks. As well as Darracott, the speaker programme also included a talk by Francesca Cartier Brickell, who explored in some detail her own family’s legacy and influence on the jewellery and watch world today.
Hair was let down at the end of day one as guests gathered for a gala dinner, where the David Wilkins Award — which recognises outstanding contributions to the valuation profession — was given to IRV chair Sammantha Maclachlan.
Day two involved a selection of interactive workshops and masterclasses, covering topics including: auctioneering and estimating strategies, gem cutting science, and watch valuation.
“This year’s Conference has been truly exceptional,” said the aforementioned Maclachlan. “Seeing such a significant increase in attendance, particularly from students, is incredibly encouraging for the future of our profession. It highlights the importance of continuing to invest in education, mentorship and accessible learning opportunities.
“The calibre of speakers, alongside the willingness of attendees to share knowledge and experience, is what makes this event so valuable. It reinforces the strength of our community and the shared commitment to maintaining the highest standards in valuation,” Maclachlan concluded.
